Why Do We
Your coolant is responsible for keeping your engine’s temperature in check. Some drivers know that your coolant is made of a propylene glycol mixture that removes heat from your engine, but did you know that your coolant is also responsible for ensuring your cooling system doesn’t freeze during winter months?
Coolant flushes not only help prevent overheating, but they also prevent freeze-overs during winter months. Come with us as we discuss the importance of coolant flushes and why Cleveland Honda is the only dealership you should trust for your coolant flushes and all of your quality maintenance and repair services.
What is a Cooling System? What is a Coolant Flush?
Your engine coolant, also known as antifreeze, is a mixture of propylene glycol fluid and distilled water that offers a decreased freezing point and an increased boiling point of regular water. This fluid is pumped around your cylinders, removing heat and preventing them from warping, before it’s pumped through your radiator to cool. Once your coolant passes through your radiator, it’s cycled through your engine to do the job over again.
Over time, your antifreeze loses its ability to resist boiling or freezing, which is why it eventually needs to be flushed.
A coolant flush is a process that typically involves flushing the cooling system, and replacing the old flud with new fluid.
A coolant flush is also referred to as an engine coolant replacement or a coolant change. When you’re due for service, trust the experts here at Cleveland Honda to get the job done.
Why Do I Need One? How Often Do I Need a Coolant Flush?
It is generally recommended that you change your coolant every 30,000 miles, however, this will vary depending on your own driving situations. Refer to your owners manual for more insight on your factory recommended coolant flush, or consult with one of our Service Advisors!
What Happens If I Don’t Get a Coolant Flush?
If your coolant level goes unchecked, your engine’s temperature will slowly rise over time due to your coolant’s inability to cool your engine. This will cause the engine to overheat and could lead to a breakdown and potential catastrophic damage to your engine.
How Do I Know When I Need a Coolant Flush? Are there any symptoms?
One of the best ways to check if your vehicle is due for a coolant flush is to check your mileage. Has it been more than 30,000 miles since your last service? If your answer is “yes”, then it’s certainly time for a coolant flush.
Here are some other tell tale signs that your cooling system is due for service:
Higher than normal engine temperature – If you notice that your engine is running hotter than normal, or if your temperature gauge is on “hot”, it’s certainly time for coolant service.
“Low Coolant” – If your vehicle is telling you that your engine coolant is low, it may be time for coolant service here at Cleveland Honda.
Burning Smell – If you notice a sweet burning smell, that’s a tell tale indicator that your coolant is burning. Schedule service with our service department and allow our experts to take a look!
