What is A Coolant Flush and Why Do I Need One?

Your engine generates a lot of heat as it runs, and to protect it from overheating, your cooling system continuously pumps coolant through it to keep it at controlled temperature. Once this specially formulated fluid is pumped through your engine, it is cycled through your radiator, where it is cooled, before it’s pumped through your engine again. This process happens over and over to prevent your engine from becoming too hot and damaging vital components.

Most people only think that coolant’s only job is to cool your engine, but its function is two fold. Engine coolant is often called anti-freeze because it prevents your cooling system from freezing over in the wintertime.

Some drivers use water from the garden hose in their vehicle’s cooling system, but when temperatures plummet, this water freezes. When water gets frozen in your vehicle’s cooling system, it can cause your water pump, or coolant lines to freeze, meaning that your engine will still get hot, but not have any means of cooling down. The end result is an overheated engine, even though temperatures outside are below freezing.

Over time, your coolant loses its ability to do its job, and must therefore be changed. Known as the Cooling system flush or the “radiator flush”, a technician will flush your old coolant out of your engine, and then replace the old fluid with fresh, new coolant.

How Often Do I Get a Coolant Flush?

To see the exact intervals for your vehicle, be sure to check the owner’s manual. There you will find the Honda recommendation for your specific model. Generally, a coolant flush is only necessary every 30,000-50,000 miles, or every five years.

If you’re not sure when the last time you had your coolant system flushed, it’s always a good idea to schedule an appointment with our service center to be on the safe side no matter the season.
